There are few coins as iconic, recognized, and influential as the South African Krugerrand. First struck in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand was the first modern gold bullion coin to be issued by any country, and became an instant sensation across the globe. Beyond its immediate popularity, the mammoth success of the Krugerrand inspired the creation of other successful bullion coins like the American Gold Eagle and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
However, while both the U.S. and Canada added silver versions of their bullion coins, the gold Krugerrand has stood alone for half a century. That is, until now! To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this historic series, the South African Mint is releasing the first-ever Silver Krugerrand in partnership with ModernCoinMart (MCM). 2017 heralds a new era for the Krugerrand, and your time is now to make sure this landmark event is part of your collection!
An iconic design, now in 99.9% pure silver!
Unchanged for decades, collectors and stackers around the world can recall the Krugerrand’s design from memory. This 2017 Silver Krugerrand continues the tradition, only this time in 1 Troy oz. of .999 pure silver.
The obverse depicts the profile of Paul Kruger, the former President of Zar, now the Transvaal Province of South Africa, from 1883-1902. In addition, Kruger’s image is surrounded by the inscriptions of “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA,” reflecting two of the 11 official languages of South Africa -- Afrikaans and English. The other side of the Krugerrand features the majestic springbok antelope wreathed by engravings of “KRUGERRAND,” “2017” and “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1.”
Innovative processes go beyond brilliant to create premium uncirculated masterpieces!
These South African legal tender Krugerrands come in a condition well beyond anything we’ve seen before for a Mint State coin series -- so much so that the South African Mint is considering these to be Gem Premium Uncirculated. This is due not only to the quality of the silver being used for each Krugerrand, but also to the South African Mint’s state-of-the-art laser etching technology that further enhances the design on each coin, providing a degree of detail that was unimaginable 50 years ago. It all results in Silver Krugerrands that have a gorgeous mint luster and distinct engraving, making this initial release all the more special.
