This year’s Gilded Edition from the Australian Lunar Series II depicts the dragon, the fifth of the twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar.
In Chinese culture, people born in the Year of the Dragon - 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012 - are regarded as confident, enterprising, independent, self-assured, brave and passionate.

Currency Act 1965, no more than 50,000 coins will be issued worldwide.
DESIGN
The coin’s reverse depicts a dragon which has been gilded in 24-carat gold. The design includes a representation of a ‘pearl of wisdom’, the Chinese character for ‘dragon’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Dragon’. The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark is also featured on the reverse.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2012 year-date are shown on the coin’s obverse. |
